Choosing a Designer: Beyond the Portfolio

Beste Guney April 1, 2025

Engaging a designer is an important decision—one that can feel like a leap of faith. You’re entrusting them with your brand’s visual identity, marketing collateral, website, or packaging. Naturally, you want to ensure they’ll create something impactful that aligns with your business goals.

While reviewing their portfolio and pricing is an essential step, these factors alone do not guarantee success. To truly assess whether a designer is the right fit, it’s crucial to ask questions that go beyond surface-level aesthetics. These inquiries should focus on the practicalities of the working relationship, laying the foundation for a smooth and productive collaboration.

Here are key questions to ask a potential designer:

1. What is your communication process?

  • How often will we be in touch during the project?

  • What communication channels do you prefer (e.g., email, project management tools, video calls)?

  • What is your typical response time to messages or questions?

2. How often do you check in with clients?

  • Regular updates are essential for keeping the project on track and ensuring alignment.

  • Ask about their preferred frequency for providing updates and scheduling feedback sessions.

3. What are the key milestones or deliverables?

  • Understanding the project timeline and expected outputs is critical for proper planning and budgeting.

  • Request a detailed project plan outlining milestones, deadlines, and deliverables.

4. How do you handle revisions and feedback?

  • Discuss their process for receiving feedback and incorporating changes.

  • Clarify how many revisions are included within the project scope and whether additional revisions incur extra costs.

5. Who will own the copyright at the end of the project?

  • Ensure you have full ownership of all work produced, including copyrights and usage rights.

6. Do you provide all project assets, such as fonts and native files?

  • Confirm that you will receive all necessary files, including source files, fonts, and any other assets required for future use or maintenance.

7. How long do you archive past client work?

  • While not always relevant, this question can clarify their approach to data security and confidentiality.

By addressing these questions early in the process, you’ll gain valuable insights into the designer’s communication style, workflow, and expectations. Open and honest conversations will help ensure that your working styles align, setting the stage for a successful collaboration.

Remember, choosing the right designer is an investment in your brand’s future. Taking the time to ask the right questions and thoroughly vet potential partners ensures you’ll find someone who understands your vision and can deliver exceptional results.

Doing business post Covid-19

So it seems as if, at least for now, the threat of the pandemic sweeping Elgin County in a devastating way seems to have abated. We don't know if that means it's gone for good or that we should be bracing for another wave, but in the meantime, life is slowly getting back to normal. And that, for some, means business is back to normal.

Disappearing content? Why bother?
Disappearing content? Why bother?

Back in August 2016, Instagram was a very strong platform for businesses, but there was one trend that its owners noticed: given that the platform is so dependent on visuals, the pressure on users to only post perfect content was very high. This need for the absolutely perfect composition, lighting, etc… make some users less likely to post often, as it was both daunting and time-consuming.

At the same time, SnapChat was the new social media platform du jour, and it’s main differentiator was the ability for users to post content that would disappear after 24 hours. Given that the content wasn’t going to be stuck on one’s feed forever gave people the opportunity to post more spontaneously, and not worry about achieving the perfect photo. SnapChat users felt less constrained within this structure, and hence posted more often. Eventually Instagram took notice.
